Impact of media

1)      Which is the most important part of the first advertisement?

2)      Why do you think it is important?

3)      Did it effect you in any form? (Did you feel happy/sad/excited/irritated/annoyed?)

Friday activities

Fridays are exciting for students and teachers as it is the last working day usually for most weeks. In order to increase the Friday feeling, we have the last period designated to fun activities on Maths, Science, Arts, English and Technology.

On the 18th of August students worked on the theme of measurement. They measured in different ways outside the classroom. Below are some pictures of the same:

They made paper planes and threw them. While their partners held the paper planes on the spot where it had managed to reach, students measured by taking steps with their feet.

They did long jump and measured the length of the jump with the help of a ribbon.

Field trip - Saturday- 26th August

The entire Juniour School of Aga Khan Academy Hyderabad visited the Qutub Shahi tombs on Saturday.
Through this trip some students revisited the history of Hyderabad while some others got to understand something new.
Below are some photographs of the field trip:

21st to 26th August

In Mathematics, students explored four different types of graphs: bar graphs, double bar graphs, pie charts and line graphs.
They also started revising place values (Indian and International systems). Below are some pictures of the same.

Students explored place values in different centers:

In unit of Inquiry students have started drafting the first formative. The criteria have been discussed with them and they will continue to work on it on Monday.

In English students are understanding how persuasive words and phrases are used in advertisements. In the context of advertisements, adjectives and verbs are being touched upon.

Week-1 continued

The unit on media started by initiating students to think about media. Newspapers, artefacts, magazines, postcards, brochures and books were given to students:

What might you have observed in these images?
What do you think about them?
Has it brought any changes in your thoughts, views or lifestyle?

The purpose was to make students think and wonder- what is media and how it influences us.

Below are some photographs of students engaged in observing, thinking and writing:

As you might be aware that the Aga Khan Academy has to incorprate the Aga Khan strands (AK strands) in the curriculum. This week was ideal to make students revisit the AK strands. In groups students identified the words they think relate to the strand. Below are some photographs of the same:

Snapshots of the first day in school

Reflection is a tool which helps an individual learn from one's own actions or circumstances they have been through or witnessed. In PYP (Primary Year Program), a student is expected to be reflective and come up with their own conclusions or solutions. Every situation in life has the potential to be reflected upon and learnt from. Therefore what better way to acquire/develop this habit than to start with it in the beginning of the year.

Grade 5 A's began the day with reflection! Students thought about the last academic year and the few people who made them happy in school on most days. They made cards and wrote some kind words for that person who made them feel good about themselves. Below are some photographs of students engaged in the activity.

This definitely helped me understand what my students value or like in others!

This was followed by assembly addressed by Ms Latha and Dr. Jeffery Fisher.

After snacks students reflected on the qualities of their classmates and wrote behind their backs on a piece of paper strung around their neck with wool. (which they made by themselves). There are a few photographs of students engaged in the above mentioned engagement.

Sometime during the day we also had a tour of the campus,

Students also played a miming game in the last game in groups. They were given words which they had to mime in such a way so that their group members could guess it.

Overall it was a fruitful day.
