Dec 4th - Dec 8th

It has been a very fruitful week. Students were able to spend quite some time inquiring, learning and understanding.
In unit of inquiry students understood concepts like economy, compression, tension, center of gravity and balance. Students brainstormed on the word economy and how it is connected to different words and how it effects our lives. They made a mind of their understanding and presented their ideas through a fish bowl activity.
To understand the science concepts of tension, compression, balance and center of gravity, they went to the science lab and did various experiments. Apart from that, Mr Sudipta, our science head of the department in seniour school helped the students understand the concepts with ease. Below are some photographs of students doing experiments:

We also had our guest speaker, who very diligently helped students understand the various factors which influence the construction of buildings and structures. As she is an architect herself, her insights were very helpful and interesting. Below are photographs of our guest speaker:

Students went for a field trip to the Hitech city in order to have a look at the different types of buildings and structures.

In English students did various engagements on the novel- The tale of Despereoux. Students started writing the character sketch of Despereoux, some students were comparing Despereoux with any other character of a book, while some make connections with other books, their lives and the world at large.
In Maths students revisited the concept of unitary method through word problems. They also revisited the concept of CORI (collecting, organising, representing and interpreting data). Students did a preunit assessment on shape and space and are revisiting different dimensions, the properties of 3D shapes and the difference between prisms and pyramids.

Oct23rd-Nov4th

It has been literally a marathon after the school reopened with lots of things coming up such as the Juniour school musical and the annual sports day. Both are going to be held in the month of December 2017. Students have begun practicing for both the events and are very excited about them.

At the same the momentum in academics continues. In Mathematics, students have revised the operations of addition and subtraction of decimal numbers and have started looking into multiplication and division of decimal numbers. They have also done co-ordinates and revised the different quadrants and their values. They represented the quadrants on the world map.
They revisited different shapes too.

In English students read myths, compared the similarities and differences between stories and myths and are writing their own myths. Most of their myths are near completion. Below are some photographs of the process of understanding myths:

In unit of inquiry, students have worked on the third line of inquiry- Processes involved in collecting, analysing and collecting data. They have inquired into specific things given to them for example the colums of Rome and other specific things related to art and architecture.
We also had a guest lecturer in class, Ms Averil, who spoke about the Greek Art. Ms Averil has been a head teacher at Montessori in England and is visiting the Academy for two months. Below is a photograph of Ms Averil with grade5's:

The last day for submission of your presentation is 13th of October 2017. Please email your presentations at this email id: reema.mitra@agakhanacademies.org

Research on any 1 civilisation (art and architechture, beliefs, Gods and goddesses, beliefs, daily life of men and women, structure of society, food, etc.)
You will do the research in your unit of inquiry note books.

Week of 30th September

This week in unit of inquiry students began their inquiry into different civilisations. They were given pictures of different structures of various civilisations and guiding questions. This led to an interesting inquiry:

In Mathematics students practised operations in fractions and they also enjoyed using ICT while solving fractions:

In English students had their summative assessment on persuasive writing and they have now started inquiring into myths.

civilisations-guiding questions

Guiding questions

Which civilisations were earliest in history? What is their time line?
(Approximately when did they begin and when did they end?)

What were the important buildings or places of that civilization?

How did the people live or what was their lifestyle like?

Did the society have any structure or class? (example pharaoh’s of Egypt were considered almost like Gods and were given a lot of respect in society.)

What kind of food did the people eat in that civilization?

What kind of work did the people engage in or what jobs did they do?

Did the people of the civilization have any particular belief or practice which is unique?

Sept 1st -15th

The two weeks passed by and students have been engaged as usual with many things in their respective classes.
In the unit of inquiry students inquired into the two lines of inquiry:
Impact of media in our lives
and
Ways to make media effective
They inquired into the above through videos, websites, discussions and situations given to them. The following are some of the situation on social media which they had to ponder on with their partners:

Students were also assessed on the above lines of inquiry and they have begun their summative assessment.
In English students have started understanding argumentative speeches and how to make arguments. Guided reading is done thrice a week instead of once a week and books are being kept in class instead of being sent home.
In Mathematics, basic operations and place value has been revised and most students are on equivalent fractions at this point while some are on improper and proper fractions.

On Saturday (9th Sept), there was a celebration of different festivals in a variety of ways. Below is a glimpse of the Durga Puja celebration.
